87th Indianapolis 500 Gloat Session (5/30/03) --The 87th running of the Indianapolis 500 has come and gone and I must say that it was a pretty entertaining race. It wasn't edge of your davenport excitement like the Texas races, but it was a very solid race nonetheless. Sam Hornish did an unbelievable job with his Panther Chevy (although it fittingly blew up with four laps left), Helio made a strong push for the three-peat, and Michael made a fitting Andretti exit from Indy. And in the end, Gil de Ferran took the flag. Gil's a good guy and a very good person to have in the IRL, but I couldn't help but be a little disappointed. It was yet another win for Team Penske and for a foreign driver. Sadly, when Scott Sharp put his car into the wall, it became pretty clear no American was going to win. But hey, it was still a lot of fun and I can't wait for eighty-eight.Now, the important stuff...my predictions! Let's take a look at how I did. Winner: Tony Kanaan He finished third and was the highest placing non-Penske car. 33rd: Shigeaki Hattori He bowed out very early and placed 30th. Pretty close with this one. Top Toyota: Gil de Ferran Nailed that one. Top Honda: Tony Kanaan I'm on a roll. Top Dallara: Tony Kanaan He was the second Dallara behind Castroneves. Not too shabby. Top G Force: Gil de Ferran I'm a genius. Castroneves Finish: He won't A perfect example of going out on a limb and falling on your face. Dark Horse: Al Unser Jr. Finished ninth. A mediocre pick at best. |
